About this event

BMAV members and volunteers are invited to socialize over light refreshments and hear from Judy and Dane Smith on their experiences in Sudan.  Dane will talk about the country's history and politics that led to the conflict in Sudan, the major issues, and possible outcome. Judy will talk about daily life and society, and about various artifacts she is bringing.

Space is limited and RSVP is required. Parking is available in the Connie Morella Library lot, in a County garage on Woodmont between Montgomery and Edgemoor, or occasionally on Montgomery Lane. If you have mobility issues, please be in touch for us to arrange convenient parking.

Dane F Smith Jr is Executive Director of AFRECS - American Friends of the Episcopal Church of the Sudans, which supports the peacebuilding, literacy, and livelihoods programs of those churches.  In the 1990s he was U.S. Ambassador to Guinea and Senegal and Special Presidential Envoy for Liberia.  Subsequently he was Senior Advisor to the US Government for Darfur.

Judy Smith, who served with her husband in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia, has taught in six countries in Africa as well as in Nicaragua and Washington DC. She served as Community Liaison Officer in Botswana and initiated a literacy and employment project in Guinea and a girls' shelter in Senegal.
