Josiah Henson: The Real Story of "Uncle Tom"
The autobiography of Josiah Henson, who was enslaved for much of his life in Montgomery County, inspired the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, which galvanized Northern public sentiment against slavery and contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War. But Henson was no "Uncle Tom;" he became an abolitionist and is honored with a national park in Canada. Montgomery County is developing the former plantation where he labored into a similar commemorative park. Come hear the full story of this remarkable individual-a little known local hero.
Ralph Buglass, Montgomery County Historical Society Speaker
