Steve Livengood is the Public Historian and Chief Guide of the US Capitol Historical Society, a private not-for-profit organization chartered by the US Congress to develop enhanced experiences related to the history of the Capitol Building and the institutions that have been housed there. His specialty is interpreting the building with historical background on the meaning of activities and artworks as the icons of representative democracy, seeing familiar things from a deeper perspective. Mr. Livengood began giving tours of the Capitol for his Member of Congress from Kansas in 1965. He has a BA in Political Science from American University. After experiencing the risks of good citizenship in Vietnam, he used his GI Bill benefits as a doctoral candidate in recent US political and social history at Emory University. He has worked in various capacities in DC political and policy circles, culminating with his work for the Capitol Historical Society since 1994. He has been given the Tourism Industry Award by the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington for his work in promoting the interpretation of the Capitol building by professional city guides. He is a board member of the Olmsted Network and helped promote Olmsted 200 for the bicentennial celebration of the genius of landscape architecture.

From beneficial yeasts that aid digestion to molds that cause serious infections, we are constantly navigating a world filled with fungi. Join us for a lecture by Nicholas Money, whose new book, Molds, Mushrooms, and Medicines, explores the amazing ways in which our health and well-being are affected by fungi. Drawing on the latest advances in mycology, Dr. Money will discuss what scientists are learning about the human mycobiome, which is formed by a hidden universe of microscopic yeasts and molds that live in our bodies. He will also highlight the importance of fungal medicines, the controversial use of magic mushrooms to treat depression, and our wider dependence on the vital roles fungi play in nature. Nicholas P. Money is professor of biology at Miami University in Ohio and the author of many books, including The Rise of Yeast: How the Sugar Fungus Shaped Civilization, which was featured in the 2018 History Book Festival in Lewes; Mushrooms: A Natural and Cultural History; and Microbiology: A Very Short Introduction. Deep in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, three times farther from the Sun than the Earth is, orbits a massive asteroid called (16) Psyche. Our upcoming exploration of this metal-rich asteroid marks an important first for humankind: We have sent people or robots to explore rocks bodies, like the Moon and Mars, and icy ones, like Europa and Enceladus, and gas-rich bodies like Jupiter, but never a body made mostly of metal. If Psyche turns out to be what we think, we’ll be visiting a new kind of world. In this Science and Society talk Lindy Elkins-Tanton will explain how a NASA mission comes to be, who is working on our team, and how far we’ve come in building this spacecraft. With Washington, DC—The National Capital—situated below the Mason-Dixon Line and surrounded on all sides by slaveholding states, the prospects for Union defeat were very real. Many people are aware of the Civil War Defenses of Washington (CWDW) and that it was composed of 68 forts and 93 batteries. But this was the strength of the defenses in 1865, at the end of the war. How did it all begin? Which were the first forts built? Which was the first fort? And was a Confederate invasion of Washington, DC possible? This presentation will look at these and more questions. Bryan Cheeseboro is a historian of the American Civil War. His activities include being a reenactor with Company B, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He has been featured on American Battlefield Trust’s Zoom Goes the History series and Antietam Live! programs. He has written for the Emerging Civil War blog. His presentations to the Rock Creek, DC Civil War Round Table include the programs Outside of Lincoln‘s White House: Civil War Men and Women of the DC Metro Area; The Grand Reviews of the Civil War; and The 1st United States Colored Infantry. He was the subject of the article “The Hands-On Historian” in the Spring 2021 issue of Civil War Monitor magazine. In February 2022, he was the guest of John R. Heckman’s (The Tattooed Historian) YouTube channel to discuss his presentation Volunteers, Substitutes, & Drafted Men: Enlisting in the Civil War. He is a Park Ranger with the National Park Service. His site is the Civil War Defenses of Washington. Reservations are required to attend OLLI in-person lectures here https://www.olli-dc.org/events/042624lecture

The Past, Present and Future of the Bethesda Meeting House – “the church that named Bethesda.” Despite being among the community’s most storied buildings, the Bethesda Meeting House was vacant and deteriorating when it was acquired last year by an affiliate of the Bethesda Historical Society. Constructed in 1820 (and rebuilt in 1850 after a fire) it features a rare “slave gallery,” was the town’s first Post Office, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the MoCo Master Plan for Historic Preservation. Tradition has it that Abraham Lincoln worshipped there, and it was occupied by Confederate cavalry during Jubal Early’s raid on Washington in July 1864. The current climate crisis has a less well known but equally ominous threat – the global biodiversity crisis. Billions of dollars are spent annually searching for life in outer space, yet here on Earth it is estimated we can only describe roughly 15% of Earth’s life forms. Plant species and animals are increasingly threatened with extinction while conservation biologists race to assess the current state of global biodiversity attempting to identify knowledge gaps. For example, fireflies are popular charismatic insects, yet a recent North American assessment found that for greater than 50% of described firefly species, we know too little to determine whether they are common, or rare, or even where they occur. Dr. Christopher Hecksher’s desire to learn more about the distribution of fireflies in eastern North America unexpectedly resulted in a crusade to explore rare and uncommon wetlands. The resulting work has been the discovery of seven species of fireflies in four Northeastern states that for more than 200 years had remained unknown to entomologists, hidden in remote wetlands in some of the most populated regions of our country. Christopher M. Heckscher, Ph.D. has been studying the distribution of fireflies in eastern North America for 25 years. He holds a B.S. in Wildlife Biology with a Minor in Zoology from Colorado State University, an M.S. in Applied Ecology and Entomology and a Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology and Entomology both from the University of Delaware. Once a month we pick a restaurant and descend en masse – partly for a fun meal out, partly to sample new places (or new choices from old places!), and partly to get to know each other better. We start early to go easy on the restaurant and get a little extra attention before the place fills up. We’ll have name tags for all. RSVP is required to co-lead Janet Dante, the earlier the better.

Note new date! Weather permitting, BMAV members will meet in-person at Bethesda Lane the second Thursday of each month - the benches near Luke‘s Lobster, which is in the pedestrian paved area between Elm St and Bethesda Ave off Arlington Rd. Maman, Hawkers and Dolcezza Gelato are other establishments located in that area.

BYO coffee. RSVPs are not required. Hosted by Ann Labriola and Naomi Collins.

If the weather is uncertain, we will send out an email by 9am on the day of the event to those on our email list to confirm or cancel the official coffee hour. People are certainly welcome to meet informally on their own if weather conditions improve after that time.
