Round House Theatre is providing free tickets to BMAV as part of its program to partner with nonprofit community organizations. Join BMAV members for the "incendiary and provocative world premiere" of of "A Jumping-Off Point." Full of humor and complex characters, A Jumping-Off Point is a sharp and electric new play from rising star playwright and screenwriter Inda Craig-Galván.

Leslie Wallace is a promising Black writer who has just landed her first deal with HBO. Her celebration is cut short when she gets a surprise visit from Andrew, a white man from her grad school cohort, who accuses her of plagiarizing his script. Their confrontation—and eventual uneasy alliance—forces a reckoning on representation, privilege, and who gets to tell what kinds of stories.
10 tickets are available, first come first served. RSVP required. Tickets will be emailed to attendees.

Paid parking is available at a flat rate of $6 for Round House patrons entering after 6 pm - underneath the theatre at 7501 Wisconsin Ave.

Ridge Line to Red Line -- 200 Years in the Life of downtown Bethesda. Wondering how much of Bethesda‘s history survives amidst the high rises that line Wisconsin Avenue? The answer is more than you probably think, and we‘ll uncover much of it as we explore how and why Bethesda came to be where and what it is today and talk about what it went through along the way. And yes, there will be lots of pictures. Due to traffic and safety concerns, attendance is limited to 15. Reply to hanklevine@gmail.com to claim your spot. For now, it‘s first come, first served -- If more than 15 sign up we’ll start a list for our next tour, planned for May. We will be covering about 1 1/2 miles, so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather [e.g., sunscreen if it‘s a sunny day]. There will be an indoor snack and bathroom break midway through the tour. There is no charge, though we welcome contributions and always encourage folks interested in our town’s history to join the Bethesda Historical Society: https://bethesdahistoricalsociety.org/membership-form/ . We start near the Bethesda Metro stop and end near Anthropologie on Bethesda Avenue. I‘ll send details to confirmed participants. Rain date is Sunday, April 21.

With Washington, DC—The National Capital—situated below the Mason-Dixon Line and surrounded on all sides by slaveholding states, the prospects for Union defeat were very real. Many people are aware of the Civil War Defenses of Washington (CWDW) and that it was composed of 68 forts and 93 batteries. But this was the strength of the defenses in 1865, at the end of the war. How did it all begin? Which were the first forts built? Which was the first fort? And was a Confederate invasion of Washington, DC possible? This presentation will look at these and more questions. Bryan Cheeseboro is a historian of the American Civil War. His activities include being a reenactor with Company B, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He has been featured on American Battlefield Trust’s Zoom Goes the History series and Antietam Live! programs. He has written for the Emerging Civil War blog. His presentations to the Rock Creek, DC Civil War Round Table include the programs Outside of Lincoln‘s White House: Civil War Men and Women of the DC Metro Area; The Grand Reviews of the Civil War; and The 1st United States Colored Infantry. He was the subject of the article “The Hands-On Historian” in the Spring 2021 issue of Civil War Monitor magazine. In February 2022, he was the guest of John R. Heckman’s (The Tattooed Historian) YouTube channel to discuss his presentation Volunteers, Substitutes, & Drafted Men: Enlisting in the Civil War. He is a Park Ranger with the National Park Service. His site is the Civil War Defenses of Washington. Reservations are required to attend OLLI in-person lectures here https://www.olli-dc.org/events/042624lecture

The Past, Present and Future of the Bethesda Meeting House – “the church that named Bethesda.” Despite being among the community’s most storied buildings, the Bethesda Meeting House was vacant and deteriorating when it was acquired last year by an affiliate of the Bethesda Historical Society. Constructed in 1820 (and rebuilt in 1850 after a fire) it features a rare “slave gallery,” was the town’s first Post Office, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the MoCo Master Plan for Historic Preservation. Tradition has it that Abraham Lincoln worshipped there, and it was occupied by Confederate cavalry during Jubal Early’s raid on Washington in July 1864. BMAV, Bethesda Historical Society, and Connie Morella Library, present Bethesda historian Hank Levine giving an illustrated tour of this iconic building’s history, significance, and future. The current climate crisis has a less well known but equally ominous threat – the global biodiversity crisis. Billions of dollars are spent annually searching for life in outer space, yet here on Earth it is estimated we can only describe roughly 15% of Earth’s life forms. Plant species and animals are increasingly threatened with extinction while conservation biologists race to assess the current state of global biodiversity attempting to identify knowledge gaps. For example, fireflies are popular charismatic insects, yet a recent North American assessment found that for greater than 50% of described firefly species, we know too little to determine whether they are common, or rare, or even where they occur. Dr. Christopher Hecksher’s desire to learn more about the distribution of fireflies in eastern North America unexpectedly resulted in a crusade to explore rare and uncommon wetlands. The resulting work has been the discovery of seven species of fireflies in four Northeastern states that for more than 200 years had remained unknown to entomologists, hidden in remote wetlands in some of the most populated regions of our country. Christopher M. Heckscher, Ph.D. has been studying the distribution of fireflies in eastern North America for 25 years. He holds a B.S. in Wildlife Biology with a Minor in Zoology from Colorado State University, an M.S. in Applied Ecology and Entomology and a Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology and Entomology both from the University of Delaware. For fifteen years, he was the Delaware State Zoologist for The Nature Conservancy and the Delaware Register with Lewes Public Library here https://delawarelibraries.libcal.com/event/11665459 These talks are co-organized and moderated by Fred Dylla, Executive Director Emeritus of the American Institute of Physics and author of Scientific Journeys, Linda Dylla, former public information officer at the Jefferson Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy, and Colin Norman, the former News Editor at Sci

For the majority of the twentieth century, private and public sectors channeled and influenced development of the county based on race and ethnicity. Montgomery Planning built a mapping tool that illustrated historic patterns of segregation in the Downcounty Planning Area by recording racial restrictive covenants in the land records. This presentation discusses the conclusions of our analysis, how de facto and de jure segregation limited opportunities for people of color, and the efforts by the Black community, local activists, and organizations to open the suburbs. The speaker, John Liebertz, is a Cultural Resources Planner with the Historic Preservation Office, Montgomery Planning, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Mary Washington and a Master’s degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Kentucky. He previously worked as a Lead Historic Preservation Specialist for EHT Traceries, Inc., a research and consulting firm in Washington, D.C., specializing in architectural history and historic preservation, and as a Principal Planner in Arlington County, Virginia. He worked on several projects including a Historic Structures Report for The President’s Guest House (Blair House), Cultural Landscape Documentation for the Millennium Project at Arlington National Cemetery and authored the Guide to African American Heritage in Arlington County (2016). Since joining Montgomery Planning in 2019, Mr. Liebertz has designated a number of historic resources at the local level and leads a multi-disciplinary team documenting racial restrictive covenants in Montgomery County. This month Tony will also discuss safety measures we can take while traveling - new devices, apps, etc.

The presidential election is now just months away and few need to be reminded of how consequential it is likely to be in the history of the country. Polls have continued to show a close contest between President Biden and former President Trump. All are invited to this presentation by Dan Balz, Chief Correspondent at The Washington Post, who will discuss the issues, the electorate and the battlegrounds where the election will be decided. He joined The Post in 1978 and has been involved in the paper’s coverage of politics throughout his career, both as a reporter and an editor. He came to The Post after nearly six years at National Journal magazine and a brief stop at the Philadelphia Inquirer. He has authored or co-authored several books, including two New York Times bestsellers. He is regular panelist on PBS’s “Washington Week” and has appeared on many other public affairs programs.

Do you want to build a community that values people of all ages? Are you interested in helping your older neighbors? Would you like to donate your time or expertise to help a local nonprofit? If so, become a volunteer for Bethesda Metro Area Village. BMAV is a volunteer-driven local nonprofit dedicated to providing services and community support that allow people to remain in their homes as they age. In this orientation, Executive Director Elizabeth Haile will go over the services offered (rides, friendly visits, in-home assistance with technology or light repairs, vacation checks, snow shoveling and garbage can placement), how requests are made and filled, and answer questions about common scenarios. Open to all friends and neighbors interested in learning about the village and the services our volunteers provide. RSVP and application required. Zoom link will be sent to registrants. Current volunteers who would like a refresher are also welcome. Check out our website or contact director@bmavillage.org for more information.

Once a month we pick a restaurant and descend en masse – partly for a fun meal out, partly to sample new places (or new choices from old places!), and partly to get to know each other better. We start early to go easy on the restaurant and get a little extra attention before the place fills up. We’ll have name tags for all. RSVP is required to co-lead Janet Dante, the earlier the better.
